Getting It Right

What casting directors
actually look for.

01

Match the mood to the role

A warm, friendly character calls for a light background and an open expression. A darker, more complex character needs lower contrast, moodier light. We'll help you think through the right approach for what you're submitting for.

02

Bring your range, not just a look

The best actor headshots aren't just attractive — they convey something. We spend time before the camera rolls understanding who you're playing and what you want a casting director to feel when they see your photo.

03

Wear the character, not an outfit

Dress as the character you want to be cast as. Your wardrobe should support the story you're telling, not distract from it. Bring multiple options and we'll advise on what's working with the light setup.

04

Natural retouching only

Casting directors need to recognise you when you walk in the room. Heavy retouching works against you. We remove minor blemishes and balance the light — nothing that changes what you actually look like.

05

Energy in the room matters

Getting the perfect shot is 99% the energy your photographer brings to the table. We're charged up, we direct, and we create an environment where emotions come naturally — not one where you're standing stiffly against a wall.

06

Fast turnaround for last-minute calls

Casting opportunities don't always give you two weeks' notice. We offer 24-hour standard delivery and same-day rush delivery on request. You book Tuesday, you have photos Wednesday. We've done it plenty of times.

FAQ

Common questions.

Depending on the package: 30 minutes for Stage Extra, 90 minutes for Broadway Theatre, and up to 3 hours for Hollywood Rockstar. We build in time to settle in, discuss looks, and make adjustments — the goal is to leave with images you're genuinely excited to submit.
Always bring more than you think you'll need. How many looks we actually shoot depends on your package and time, but having options on hand lets us react to what's working on camera. We'll advise on what reads best under the lights.
It depends on the role. Lighter backgrounds with a warm tone work well for friendly, comedic, or accessible characters. Darker, more muted backgrounds suit complex, dramatic, or intense roles. If you have a specific casting in mind, tell us — we'll set up accordingly. We have a full range of options in studio.
Standard delivery is within 24 hours. If you have a submission deadline the same day, ask us when you book — we've turned images around in under 4 hours for urgent casting calls. Rush rates may apply.
Yes. Nils has worked with first-time actors building their first submission set as well as seasoned professionals refreshing their look. The Stage Extra package is built for exactly this — straightforward, fast, and well-priced for a first portfolio. We'll guide you through every part of it.
